The Godzilla Minus One crew wore some mad kaiju-themed shoes to the Oscars

The shrewdest in Hollywood know the potential media op of a red carpet – especially at the Oscars 2024. That’s why Margot Robbie pushed Barbie fits wherever she could. That’s why Ryan Gosling pushed Ken fits wherever he could. And that’s why the Godzilla Minus One crew went all haute kaiju couture on us with some good and extremely mad shoes.

At the 96th Annual Academy Awards in Los Angeles, CG director Masaki Takahashi, director Takashi Yamazaki, visual effects director Kiyoko Shibuya, and compositor Tatsuji Nojima all rocked up to the red carpet in a quartet of classic black tie looks. We’re talking tuxes and bow ties and flowy evening dresses. Y’know, the typical fits that you’d see at the Oscars.

These four were part of the ultra-talented team that took home the award for Best Visual Effects for Godzilla Minus One. And while they couldn’t bring the big lizard to the actual ceremony (he doesn’t do well in crowds), they did the next best thing: wear shoes directly inspired by the legendary kaiju itself.

Takahashi, Yamazaki, and Nojima all wore black leather derbies that replaced the traditional laces with a single metal zip, while Shibuya opted for a pair of patent Mary Janes instead. The styles couldn’t be more different from one another. But what linked them altogether was a heel that was specifically made to look like one of Godzilla’s giant claws (Godz-heel-a?), complete with a set of neatly-manicured chrome nails.

Created by Japanese designer Matsui Ryosuke, her brand Ha Za Ma has always been about taking conventional footwear and flipping the script with some mad, mad heels since its 2017 launch. From shiny crystals all the way to pistol grips, she can take inspo from absolutely anything – and they make for pretty mad shoes.

Seán McGirr revealed something very similar recently with his Alexander McQueen horse-hoof boots. And just last month, Italian label GCDS took to the runways of Milan Fashion Week with a pair of Morso pumps, with “heels shaped like a snarling jaw.” While the Godzilla kicks were exclusively made for the cast and crew, Ryosuke took to X (FKA Twitter) saying: “There is a possibility that we may be able to sell the stock in a little while, so if you are interested, please wait for information from us.” And of course, everyone’s going to want a pair – nerd film merch has never been this fun.
