Patrick Mahomes shocked at coin toss call in mic’d up vision, Chiefs v 49ers

New mic’d up vision has revealed Kansas City’s shock, and delight, at the surprising extra-time coin toss call made by the 49ers in the Super Bowl.

San Francisco coach Kyle Shanahan made the controversial decision to begin overtime on offense after winning the toss, despite the new NFL playoff rules that make sure both teams get at least one possession even if a touchdown is scored first.

The 49ers kicked a tie-breaking field goal, but the Chiefs made the most of having the final say, answering with a walk-off touchdown to secure a 25-22 victory at Allegiant Stadium.

The footage aired by Inside the NFL shows discussions between Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and coach Andy Reid before the toss, confirming they would elect to kick the ball if they won the toss. Mahomes and star teammate Travis Kelce are visibly and audibly shocked after 49ers call, with even the match referee seemingly showing surprise at the decision.

“They wanted it!”, Mahomes runs back to tell his team.

Kelce was laughing while recounting the decision to brother Jason on the New Heights podcast.

“You win the coin toss that’s what you get, you get the opportunity to have the advantage and they handed it right over to us … damn it,” Kelce said.

“.. I jumped out of my seat and said let’s go. They want to receive? We get second possession and know exactly what they’ve got, defence, hold them to three. We’re going to go down here and win this thing baby.”

Shanahan has explained that he was thinking several moves ahead with the decision, looking toward a potential third overtime possession when the game becomes sudden death.

“None of us have a ton of experience with it,” Shanahan said. “We went through all the analytics and talked to those guys. We decided it would be better getting the ball because if both teams matched and scored, we wanted to be the ones to have a chance to go and win it.”

However the Inside the NFL panel suggested someone on Shanahan’s team may have to pay the price for the call.

“He was shocked, I was shocked, everyone was shocked. You’re going to give Patrick Mahomes the ball second and give him four downs? Someone’s getting fired,” former NFL quarterback Jay Cutler said.

“The Chiefs got exactly what they wanted.”
