Brisbane coach Chris Fagan says the club fears Keidean Coleman has suffered an ACL tear to further sour his side’s one-point loss to Carlton in a potential hammer blow.

Coleman hyperextended his knee in a tackle just before half-time of the Lions’ one-point loss to Carlton at the Gabba on Thursday night.

The gun halfback came from the ground in the hands of trainers in worrying scenes before being subsequently subbed out of the game.

Speaking after the loss, Fagan confirmed Brisbane was preparing for the worst news, with Coleman set to undergo scans.

“At this stage, it looks like an ACL,” a dejected Fagan told reporters.

“We haven’t had much luck with ACLs when you think of Hipwood, Rayner, ‘Ashy’ (Ashcroft) last year and now ‘Kiddy’ (Coleman) tonight.

“That’s not confirmed, but more than likely that’s what we think.”

An ACL injury would rule out Coleman for the remainder of the 2024 season in a brutal setback to one of Brisbane’s most important players in its flag tilt.

The 23-year old was one of the best players in Brisbane’s 2023 Grand Final grand final loss to Collingwood, finishing second to Bobby Hill in the Norm Smith Medal voting.

As Fagan alluded to, Coleman would be Brisbane’s third player sidelined with an ACL injury, with recruit Tom Doedee nearing his return, but Will Ashcroft still a ways off.

“We get disappointed for all the lads who get those sorts of injuries because we know the road back is a long road back,” Fagan added.

“It’ll create an opportunity for somebody else, which will be their good fortune. But a this point in time if it goes the way we think, we’re sad for ‘Kiddy’.”

MORE TO COME.
