The second T20 between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka was marred in controversy after third umpire Masudur Rahman overturned an on-field decision for caught behind despite a clear spike on Snicko.

During the fourth over of Bangladesh’s run chase in Sylhet, opener Soumya Sarkar was given out by on-field umpire Sharfuddoula following a short delivery from Sri Lankan seamer Binura Fernando that was caught by wicketkeeper Kusal Mendis. Sarkar, unbeaten on 14 at the time, immediately reviewed the decision, but began walking off when the venue’s big screen displayed a spike on Snicko.

However, Rahman declared there was a “clear gap” between bat and ball when the spike appeared, arguing the noise came from elsewhere and overturning the decision.

Sri Lanka’s players were not impressed, confronting Sharfuddoula as coach Chris Silverwood sough fourth umpire Tanvir Ahmed for an explanation.

“The on-field umpire has given it out,” Sri Lanka assistant coach Naveed Nawaz said at the post-match press conference.

“I am sure the TV umpire usually needs to have conclusive evidence to overturn the umpire’s decision. It was clear that there was a spike. We saw it on the big screen. We might have to take it with the match referee to see what actually happened there. The footage on our screens was not enough to say anything. I am sure the TV umpire would have had evidence to overturn what the on-field umpire had given.

“It would have been the first wicket. It would have given us a headstart by taking the wicket. On a track like this, any wicket is crucial.”

Sarkar was later dismissed by Matheesha Pathirana in the seventh over for 26.

Kamindu Mendis top-scored with 37 as Sri Lanka posted 5-165 in the second T20 against Bangladesh in Sylhet on Wednesday.

Needing a win to stay alive in the series after a three-run loss in the opening match on Monday, Bangladesh won the toss and elected to field first.

Soumya Sarkar, Taskin Ahmed, Mahedi Hasan and Mustafizur Rahman each claimed a wicket as Bangladesh’s bowlers strived to restrict the Sri Lankans.

Sri Lanka got off to a slow start – needing eight balls to score their first run – with opener Aviska Fernando falling first, but Kamindu and Kusal Mendis put on 66 runs for the second wicket, to give Sri Lanka a platform for a big score.

Seamer Soumya dismissed Kusal for 36 to break the partnership to halt Sri Lanka’s progress.

Kamindu was run out after hitting three fours and two sixes in a 27-ball innings, while stand-in skipper Charith Asalanka hit 28 off 14 balls, with three sixes and a four.

But Mahedi bowled Asalanka before he inflicted too much damage on the home side. However, Angelo Mathews and Dasun Shanaka ensured Sri Lanka did not lose their way completely.

The pair added 53 runs for the sixth wicket, with Mathews leading their way with 32 not out.

Shanaka, Sri Lanka’s bowling hero in the opening match, was unbeaten on 20.
